Trading Sessions & Best Times to Trade

The forex market is open 24 hours a day, but not all hours are created equal. Understanding trading sessions helps you trade when volatility and liquidity are highest.

The Three Major Trading Sessions

1. Asian Session (Tokyo)

Hours: 12:00 AM - 9:00 AM GMT (7:00 PM - 4:00 AM EST)

Major centers: Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore

Volatility: Low to moderate

Best pairs: USD/JPY, AUD/USD, NZD/USD, GBP/JPY

The Asian session is characterized by range-bound markets and lower volatility. It is a good session for traders who prefer slower, more predictable movements.

2. European Session (London)

Hours: 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM GMT (2:00 AM - 11:00 AM EST)

Major centers: London, Frankfurt, Zurich

Volatility: High

Best pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, EUR/JPY

London is the largest forex trading center in the world, accounting for over 30% of all forex volume. This session typically sees strong trends and high liquidity.

3. US Session (New York)

Hours: 12:00 PM - 9:00 PM GMT (7:00 AM - 4:00 PM EST)

Major centers: New York, Chicago

Volatility: High (especially during overlap with London)

Best pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY

The US session brings high volatility, especially when major economic data (NFP, CPI) is released.

Session Overlaps

The most active trading periods occur when two sessions overlap.

London-New York Overlap (12:00 PM - 4:00 PM GMT)

The most volatile period of the day

Highest liquidity and tightest spreads

Best for day traders and scalpers

Major news often released during this window

Asia-London Overlap (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM GMT)

Short overlap period

Moderate volatility

Can see trend continuation from Asian session

Weekend gap: Market closed Friday to Sunday — gaps can occur

Major holidays: Christmas, New Year, Thanksgiving — very low volume

Immediately before major news: Spreads widen, unpredictable moves

Practical Tips

Trade during your local session or the London session for best results

Check the economic calendar before each trading session

Focus on 1-2 currency pairs that are active during your chosen session

Avoid trading during low-volume periods unless using a range strategy
